Food activists and environmentalists were the unruly guests, so to speak, at the Whole Foods Market shareholders meeting in Vancouver, B.C. this past week, according to the Organic Consumers Association.
Members of the Sustainable Supply Chain Coalition charged that the giant grocery chain is engaging in unsustainable business practices and is misleading its customers. According to the OCA report, WFM top management has denied the existence of climate change, and stocked store shelves with products labeled as "natural" but not certified organic. The alliance claims this misleads consumers.
An excerpt from the OCA report: " 'The recent actions taken by Whole Foods' management such as denying global warming and intimidating its workers has set the sustainability movement in an uproar that is making it a risk to shareholders and investors,' said Jamie Biggar, Chairman of the Board of the Sierra Club of British Columbia. 'The share price has fallen 30 percent over the last five years.' "
